WOW

St. Senan's Primary School is working towards receiving our fourth Green-Schools Green Flag from An Taisce. The theme of this flag is Travel. During the month of June, pupils, parents, teachers and S.N.A's have promoted healthy lifestyles by walking to school. Our Green-Schools Committee organised a campaign called WOW (Walk On Wednesdays). This initiative is all about inviting pupils and parents to walk to school, rather than taking the car. We met at St. Senan's Parish Church car park every WOW day. The WOW days were a huge success. Many pupils took part resulting in less traffic congestion at the school gates. Pupils commented on how safe they felt as they wore Hi-Vis jackets and walked in twos together. The walking school bus was a supervised by adults and we had Garda presence one of the mornings. On arrival to school, Mr. Goff had a treat for every pupil who took part. Some senior pupils even remarked that they would take part again next year regardless of whether they got a treat or not! This attitude is exactly what the Green-Schools Committee hoped for. In April our Green-schools co-ordinator, Elaine O' Grady, and Garda Ursula Quarry carried out a Travel Workshop Day. They gave talks and did activities on Road Safety with classes from across the school. Parents and teachers alike commented on the success of the Travel Workshop. Spectators admired the banners and flags carried by participants in the WOW events. This campaign is one of many ideas in which th Green-Schools committee want to establish more environmentally friendly ways in travelling to school. We would like to thank all those who helped launch WOW days and for all the participation, assistance and support on the days. Go raibh míle maith agaibh!
