In St. Senan’s Primary School we play hurling, football, soccer and tag rugby. We played GAA and soccer during break times. We organise soccer leagues for school for break times. Recently there were eight teams split in to two groups. We played a match from each group every day - so long as it wasn’t raining.
Hurling
In St. Senan’s we do a lot of sports. We have a long tradition of playing football and hurling. In a recent Rackard League we got to the quarter final, but unfortunately we were knocked out at that stage.
After the Rackard League campaign we played our own mini league in school. This mini league offers people, who didn’t make the hurling panel for the school team, a chance to play and develop their skills. We also provide hurls and helmets for people who forget to bring their gear to school or who don’t have their own. Hurls and helmets can also be bought in the school at a lower cost.
During the year hurling trainers visit the school to promote the game with younger classes. Toward the end of the year there is a raffle in the school where children can win free places in the GAA Cúl Camps, which is great.
Football
St. Senan’s Primary School we have a great history of sports. During the school year we have a Gaelic Football league for Third and Fourth Classes and a separate league for Fifth and Sixth Classes. The teachers pick a panel of around 25 children, mostly from Fifth and Sixth Classes to form a panel for the Rackard League school team. We train at break times and play matches after school. We usually play Gorey, Ferns and the other school in our town, St. Aidan’s Primary School, every year.
