Fís Film Project for Primary Schools

Fís is an initiative from the Department of Education and Science which is designed to introduce the medium of film as a support to the Primary School Curriculum

After our success last year, St. Senan’s Primary School continues to participate in the
Fís Film Project for Primary Schools this year. Our last film which the children of Fourth and Sixth Class entitled ‘Hurling Strikes Back’ won Best Production at the County Wexford Fís Awards in late June 2006. We were then invited to the National Fís Awards 2006, held at the Helix Theatre in Dublin in October 2006.

School Fís Awards

The National Fís Awards were hosted my TG4 weatherman and Charity You’re A Star personality, Dáithí Ó Sé. Also in attendance was Minister for Education and Science, Mary Hanafin, who commented on the value of film making as a new means of learning skills in primary schools. ‘Hurling Strikes Back’ was nominated for Best Directing and Best Editing at the ceremony, and was awarded the Best Science Fiction Film from a short list of twenty four films from around the country.

Firstly, the class learned about all aspects of film making from the history of film to using a digital video camera. Then they got a chance to use their new skills to script, devise, film and act in their own class movie. The futuristic film, focused on the revival of the game of hurling, as the children learn the story of Cú Chulainn for the first time.
