A unit for children on the Autistic Spectrum was set up in St. Senans Primary School in 2005, funded by the Department of Education. The Unit has three classes. Each class is directed by the teacher and the children are assisted by our SNAs (special needs assistants).
We enjoy lots of different activities in each room. Just look at our photos!!
Cooking is great fun and we enjoy tasting what we create! We have made all sorts of things e.g. rice crispy buns, jam, pastry cups, pasta and even Christmas dinner!!
Here we are on a trip to the post box at Christmas time. We wrote letters to Santa and posted them!
Our school garden is very important and we help to plant bulbs and flowers as well as helping to maintain it by keeping it neat and tidy and pulling the weeds!
We find the Occupational Therapy (OT) and Sensory rooms very useful for helping us to relax. Usually, we visit each room a few times a week with our class or therapist.
Being part of a large mainstream school such as St. Senan’s enables us to run an effective integration programme. This starts with reverse integration and peer pairing, with a view to gradually integrating the child into its mainstream class. The level of integration will vary according to the individual needs of the child.
Children in the unit have their Individual Educational Plan, covering their priority learning needs in all domains (learning to learn, communication skills, social skills, academic, self care, motor, play and leisure skills etc).
